About the Agriculture & Natural Resources Industry Sector:

The Agriculture and Natural Resources sector is designed to provide a foundation in agriculture for all agriculture students in California. Students engage in an instructional program that integrates academic and technical preparation and focuses on career awareness, career exploration, and skill preparation in various pathways. The pathways emphasize real-world, occupationally relevant experiences for students in the Modesto City Schools District. Classroom and laboratory instruction, supervised agricultural experience projects, and leadership and interpersonal skills development prepare students for continued training, advanced educational opportunities, and entry to a career.

Impact of Agriculture and Natural Resources:

According to California statistics there are so many employment opportunities in California in the agriculture and natural resources sector. California produces more than 400 different types of crops.

California produces more food than any other state and is the 5th largest producer of food in the world.

Pathway Highlights:

  • Hands-on learning in a variety of school facilities including: greenhouses, ag shops, school farms, ag facilities

  • Student leadership through the FFA

  • Opportunity to travel to colleges and universities

  • Potential to earn money through student projects

  • Learn industry job skills

  • Fun student activities

  • Competitions at the local, sectional, state and national level

UC A-G Credit:

All of the Agriculture classes meet the A-G University of California's list of required courses for college admission.

Certifications:

Many of our CTE pathways offer industry recognized certifications that can be added to a student's portfolio. Certifications offered from the Agriculture Pathways vary between each high school, but can include OHSA 10, iCEV-Plant Science/Floral, and Cat/Dog CPR.

Articulations:

CTE Transitions (formerly known as Articulation) program offers high school students the opportunity to jump-start college by earning college credit while still in high school. High school students have the opportunity to earn college credit and high school credit simultaneously for certain articulated courses with Modesto Junior College. These courses are governed by an agreement between Modesto Junior College and Modesto City Schools which ensures use of like curriculum and exams. Students earn college credit upon passing the end of course examination.

Activities:

Agriculture students are automatically enrolled in the FFA, a high school youth leadership and career development organization. The FFA programs have numerous student functions, including monthly meetings, fun activities, and the opportunity to create life-long friendships.

How to Apply:

If a student is already enrolled at an MCS High School, they will need to let their counselor know that they would like to be a part of the Agriculture pathways; and ballot for one or more of the Agriculture pathway classes.

All 8th grade students will need to ballot for the Agriculture pathway classes that are offered at their particular high school.

If a student is an 8th, 9th, or 10th grader attending a school in a different high school boundary in Modesto, you can request an intradistrict transfer from your home high school; or pursue open enrollment. If you’re an 8th, 9th, or 10th grader attending a school outside of Modesto City Schools, you can request an interdistrict transfer from your home high school’s district office.
