The Health Science classes at Elliott Alternative Education Center teach and certify students in a variety of medical skills, including life saving CPR. One student, Yalda Walid, a junior, used her training in real life to save a customer at the restaurant where she works. Yalda saw a female customer that was struggling and showing signs of choking and the woman's family was panicking. Another person that was with the customer, had tried to hit her on the back to help dislodge the food but was not successful. Yalda knew she had to do something and stepped in to help the struggling woman. Yalda used her CPR training to dislodge the food that had caused the woman to choke. The customer was very thankful for Yalda's quick actions. Way to go Yalda Walid!! We are extremely proud of your actions. #ModestoCitySchools, #CTE, #FutureMedicalCareer

Gregori Medical Science students get certified in CPR and AED. The certifications are good for 2 years and are a great addition to student repertoire of skills learning in this program. Downey's Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) won a $10,000 prize for their community service project! This is the second year in a row that they have been awarded the Grand Prize. Club members are passionate about helping other Downey students in need. They organized a drive to solicit donations that paid for a new pair of shoes, food gift cards, food bags, warm clothes, toiletries, and other gifts for 13 homeless students that attend Downey. This community service project was submitted to the Lead4Change Challenge and they won! The money will be donated to the Center for Human Services to support its Youth Navigation Center. Downey CTE Culinary students prepared breakfast for the Modesto Teachers Association meeting. The menu included a baked egg dish, fresh fruit, sausage patties, and bacon and a variety of beverages.
